The NIFL began in 2001 with 18 teams, some departing from the faltering IPFL, the folding IFL and new franchises. The league played its first game March 28, 2001 and concluded the season with Indoor Bowl I on August 4, 2001. The NIFL has stuck around longer than any of the indoor leagues that preceded it.

NIFL game ball is a Baden composite model with the league logo on
one panel and the home team’s logo on the other. Each home
team supplies game balls with its own logo.
