Independent
Women’s Football League
2000–Present
The
IWFL was founded in 2000 and has affiliated teams from Canada and
the United States playing a spring schedule. As with other women’s
leagues, a number of teams switch between leagues yearly. IWFL games
use the same rules as men’s leagues with three exceptions:
the IWFL uses a smaller football, requires only one foot inbound
on pass receptions has banned chop blocking to protect the knees
of the athletes.
The
IWFL used a Wilson junior-sized ball like the other women’s
leagues until it switched to a new Nike “All-American-Girl”
football in 2004. Its red, white, and blue panels makes it quite
unique among official game balls.
